Gap year volunteers are needed to coach sports, athletics, basketball and gymnastics to
disadvantaged children. The focus is on achieving sporting excellence in gymnastics, tennis, squash, table tennis
and swimming. Volunteers would be based at a purpose built sports stadium in central Quito.
Description of Project
This is a new project located in a purpose built stadium central Quito. Children aged 5 – 14 from disadvantaged
backgrounds are invited to attend sports, gymnastic, athgletics, basketball, swimming, climbing, martial arts, tennis,
table tennis and chess lessons every day. Standards are high, the children are disciplined and they take their training
seriously. The structure of the school day allows them to attend lessons regularly throughout the week. Gymnastics,
swimming and sports have tended to be activities for the wealthy Ecuadorians and this is the first project of its kind
that focuses on providing standards of sporting excellence for children from poorer families.
Volunteer Responsibilities / Activities
Enthusiasm for one of these sports is the key. However standards are high and ideally you would have played your
sport to a good competitive standard and had some experience in coaching. If you have a qualification you would be
asked to take control of groups and organize coaching lessons. If you have not done this before you would be an
assistant coach and work under a properly qualified Ecuadorian sports coach. The facilities are excellent and you
would be based at a purpose made complex of gyms, a swimmingpool, tennis courts, athletics stadium, squash courts and
open playing fields in central Quito.
