Volunteer in the wonderful country of Nepal on your career break working in the office
of this NGO. It provides support in the form of healthcare, child protection and education for street
children. Work includes carrying out research, writing reports and conducting impact assessments.
Description of Project
This highly professional International NGO supports street children, working children and victims
of human trafficking. It works with a number of Nepalese partners and government departments in
education, health and social inclusion. The focus is to improve how they respond to the many
difficulties they face and to develop effective and sustainable services for the future. For example
they support a primary health clinic for children and mothers in Pokhara, health provision and
promotion programmes in rural areas, a programme to eliminate child labour and vocational training
centres for street children and deaf children.
At the Vocational Training Centre in Pokhara the children can learn plumbing, care giver skills,
secretarial skills and electrical skills. They also run a number of centres where vulnerable children
at risk can receive an education, food and a safe play environment. All these projects are staffed by
Nepalese people. The main goal of this volunteer project in Nepal is to protect children's rights to
the following:
To Survival
By improving access to effective and humane primary health care for pregnant women, children
and young people – particularly the poorest, most marginalised and vulnerable.
By working with communities to improve traditional practices and home care.
By health promotion that gives children and communities better knowledge to protect their
health (including sexual health).
By public health initiatives that reduce the damage from common problems such as indoor smoke
from cooking fires.

Volunteer Responsibilities / Activities
In most cases volunteers do not work with the actual beneficiaries of each project. It is firmly
believed that local Nepalese staff are better qualified to do this. The aim is to build the capacity
of local people. There is however a definite role for a career break volunteer to carry out research
into one of a number of programmes in order to properly understand the nature of the problems that the
project is supporting. Impact studies are also needed to review how current projects can be improved.
You would need to have good writing skills to create reports, write fund raising proposals and create
brochures. It would be an added bonus if you were able to create or design a website. The Nepalese
staff are all keen to learn English and if time allows you could spend a few hours each week teaching
English to the project staff. The project needs professional volunteers in the above fields
(protection of rights) or in fundraising and management. Many of our projects offer support to
vulnerable children. We will ask all volunteers to complete an enhanced CRB check. In addition to this
many of our partner organisations have their own child protection policy.
You could make a real difference – to others and yourself!
