Coach football and coach sports in Galle, Sri Lanka, on your gap year. This project is
ideal for anyone with football coaching experience who has a passion for football and wants to volunteer
on a gap year sports project abroad.
Description of Project
This football coaching project is based in the colonial town of Galle in the southwest of Sri Lanka.
The project coordinates a series of football coaching clubs for children aged 7 – 18 years. Two of
the older boys have recently qualified for the Sri Lanka under 18 national squad. The football club have
their own pitch, Spartan changing rooms and sets of basic equipment. It is well organised with four
volunteer Sri Lankan coaches two of which speak excellent English. The children are divided into age
groups and attend the sessions regularly throughout the week.
The national team have yet to qualify for the world cup and funding is limited. However training
facilities are constantly improving, and there is tremendous enthusiasm for the sport both locally and
nationally. This is serious football project and would be ideal for a male volunteer with a passion for
football coaching.
Volunteer Responsibilities / Activities
You would need to have masses of enthusiasm for coaching football, have a basic qualification and
some experience in coaching. Volunteers with sufficient experience would take their own squads and be
in charge of their own training programmes. Those with less experience would work as assistant
coaches.
The project runs every afternoon and the timetable is busy. Volunteers would be expected to spend
their mornings teaching at one of our local schools.
