Volunteer in Africa

Today we have launched a further opportunity to volunteer in Africa, this time in a special needs school in Voi, Kenya. Your accommodation is on the fence line of Tsavo East national park, in quiet isolation with the shapes of elephant and zebra never far away.

The special needs unit is part of a mainstream school in town, offering a residential service aimed at drawing out children with disabilities from the homes where they are so often hidden from society. The ambition of the staff and support of donors is currently driving the development of the school, despite a lack of resources and skills, and the skills and capacity of volunteers would be a welcome addition in a number of areas:

  • teaching deaf children
  • speech therapy for the deaf
  • artistic skills, to paint learning aids on the school walls and share your talents with the children
  • IT skills, to train both children and staff on basic computer skills
  • vocational skills such as sewing, or craft skills that can help empower children towards a brighter future

For full details of the project see the project page, or contact us to talk about it informally.

The school has for some time been sponsored by a friend of Outreach living in Kenya, and we are very keen to show our support. Read Nigel’s latest update on the progress of the school.
