Project summary

Human trafficking in Cambodia is a significant and complex problem. Factors pushing people into situations of exploitation include poverty, lack of education, lack of employment, family breakdown and landlessness. Factors pulling people into exploitation include demand for sexual services, demand for labour, and economic disparities between regions and countries.

The project provides legal and social service support to victims of human trafficking and sexual abuse. It is a large project, with roughly 50 staff and local volunteers. It also provides resources, promotes best practices and supports nearly 50 organizations that address human trafficking issues in Cambodia, from small grassroots organizations to large International NGOs. There is a collaboration with UN and government agencies.

Capacity building programmes work with smaller members, focusing on project management and social worker skills. This includes an initiative that provides micro grant funding to promote the work of the smallest members.

In addition to working with members the project conducts local prevention programmes and conducts research into issues surrounding human trafficking. Child protection is provided through capacity building and raising awareness. This is done by running workshops in local communities and among member organizations.

Volunteer roles and responsibilities

This is a large, developing project with a wide range of areas that require volunteer help. As a growing organisation, they need all of the skills and expertise required to manage an increasingly complex enterprise, especially taking into account their relationship with members. Lawyers, people with marketing skills, social work skills, human resources, administration, research & data extraction, education, financial and fund raising, and writing ability are all needed.

Your exact role would depend upon your skills, experience and qualifications. A tailored project would be created on your behalf to match your skills to the objectives of the organisation.

Volunteers are able to join this NGO to perform primarily office based work, based in the capital Phnom Penh.

How you can make a difference

Specific roles are created to suit the skills and experience of volunteers. Human trafficking is a serious concern in Cambodia, as it increasingly is in the UK, and raising awareness is of prime importance. This organisation is a leading light in advocacy, providing support and tackling the issue.

What is distinctive about this project:

This is an unusual opportunity to get directly involved in a serious, highly professional non-governmental organisation that addresses an important humanitarian issue. The fact that it is Cambodia gives the right volunteer an opportunity to get an insight to a wonderful new culture at the same time.

Blue Tiger Features:

This project has been hugely successful for a number of our volunteers, each of whom have brought skills to the project; from general administrative know how, to senior HR and legal skills. Volunteers need to be able to work in a different culture, adapting to a different pace and with the flexibility to contribute at a senior level one minute, and then help with stuffing envelopes the next.

Season:

This project is always open, but applications need to be properly reviewed well in advance of travel plans.

Languages:

Local staff are well educated and many speak good English.

Experience required:

You are invited to this project based on the resource and experience you can bring. As a serious NGO they need experienced volunteers to commit to delivering on agreed objectives, that can be delivered largely autonomously. Experience of working with a different culture would be of use. A criminal record check will be required.

Good to know:

This project ideally needs a 3 month commitment from volunteers, to enable them to contribute meaningfully. You would stay in an Outreach International rented apartment with other volunteers working on different projects, so plenty of scope to make new friends and enjoy the huge amount Cambodia has to offer.
